Positive Discipline and Behaviour Policy A Family's Guide Produced by Staff and Parents

 

Policy Aim

Nurture a happy secure atmosphere where the treatment of all, including discipline is consistent and fair; Develop an inclusive school community; Foster a sense of pride in the school; Promote partnership with parents within a framework of mutual support; Share good practice through our in-house data bank.

 

Definitions

Unacceptable behaviour includes: Bullying, fighting, physical abuse, racism, sexism, refusal to follow instructions, repeatedly off task. Positive behaviour includes: Positive personal qualities, positive attitudes, high self esteem, positive awareness of health and safety issues.

 

Procedures

The individual teacher uses professional judgement: -deal with it in the class -use your network teacher -refer to senior management -trigger CEC log re antiracism / anti-bullying -use red card for immediate adult assistance.

 

Classroom Strategies

Points system, stars and stickers, certificates, 'catch them being good', promoting safe practices, brain gym, PSD activities such as Circle Time and The Learning Game. Through discussion each class produces positive classroom rules which each pupil agrees to and signs. This is displayed in the classroom and collectively in the school.

 

 

Good Practice

Effective positive teaching includes Careful planning, connecting learning, ensuring all resources are to hand, welcoming pupils into the classroom, establishing positive relationships with parents, promoting school and classroom charters, use of networking.

 

Networking

A supportive partnership between colleagues to promote positive discipline. It is used to: -give a pupil time and space away from classmates -diffuse a situation and give a cooling off period The teacher indicates the purpose and duration needed for the pupil on a networking slip. Slips are held and monitored by the headteacher.

 

Helping at home

Parents can support their children at home by: Talking through the highs and lows, giving reassurance and time to reflect. Sharing successes and rewards with friends and family.

 

Gylemuir Primary School Pupils' Charter

Through class discussion and assemblies the pupils put together the following charter

1. We are polite and honest.

2. We are kind and considerate. 3. We think about safety.

4. We are responsible.

 

Glylemuir Pupils say No to: Bullying, name calling, fighting or encouraging fighting, threats, racism or sexism, making faces, swearing, abusing school property or belongings, spitting, leaving people out, litter, throwing stones, speaking without thinking.

 

Gylemuir Pupils say Yes to: Speaking up, being friendly, caring for one another, being polite, helping people when the are hurt, letting people join in, being considerate, being truthful, taking care of our environment, safe play and playing safely, conserving school rules
