Here in Gylemuir we are working hard to attain our second accreditation to become a health promoting school. We were awarded our first accreditation in December 2007 and have just received confirmation of our Stage 2 award in February 2009
THE INFORMATION GATHERING PROCESS
Since beginning this work we have consulted with all interested parties to help identify aspects of our school which were working very well. The responses also helped us to identify areas for development work. These areas formed our Helath Promoting Schools Action Plan.
The following groups were consulted -
- Pupils - all pupils in P4 - 7 were asked to fill in a questionnaire. P1 - 3 discussed health issues as a class.
- Parents - each family from Nursery to P7 were also asked to fill in a questionnaire.
- Staff - all members of the school staff also completed questionnaires
OUR ACTION PLAN
We had a great response from all our groups. 133 families returned their completed questionnaires - thank you to everyone who did so. All the responses were collated. After the results were collated were able to identify our 4 priorities for our Action Plan.
These are our 4 priorities -
PUPIL TOILETS - (identified by pupils, parents and staff)
We aim to upgrade our pupil toilets throughout the school so our pupils experience a more pleasant environment. We also aim to reinforce key hygiene principles eg washing hands
PUPIL COUNCIL - (identified by pupils)
We aim to re-launch our Gylemuir Pupils Council. Each class P4-7 will elect a member to represent them on the Pupil Council. There will be regular meetings of the Pupil Council.
INFORMING PARENTS ABOUT THE HEALTH CURRICULUM - (identified by parents)
We aim to provide better quality information to parents about the health curriculum in taught in Gylemuir. We will do this through year group newsletters, e-leaflets on our website and whole shool newsletters relating to health issues.
STAFF HEALTH & WELFARE - (identified by staff)
We aim to develop a programme of activities to help promote healthy living for all our school staff.
