Gylemuir Primary School

P1 Spring Term 2009

CHINESE NEW YEAR

In Primary One we have been learning all about the Chinese New Year. We heard the story of all the animals racing to be first so that the year could be named after them. On our display we have the names of all the different animals.

At Chinese New Year, lots of cards and pictures use the colour red, so we did lots of red painting and drawings. People receive money at New Year in red envelopes - so we tried to design our own.

BURNS CELEBRATION

We have enjoyed taking part in the 250th birthday celebrations for Robert Burns. We learned to say a Scottish poem  and performed this for other classes to hear at our Burns Celebration Assembly. Everyone enjoyed listening to our poems and we enjoyed performing for them.

We also had a celebration with our P6 partners. We showed off our dancing skills - everyone had been practising very hard! Afterwards we enjoyed some Scottish food - oatcakes, cheese, shortbread and of course some Irn Bru to drink! This was a good way to celebrate Burns Birthday!

GYLEMUIR PEACE GARDEN

Everyone in P1 took part in the opening ceremony of our Peace Garden. Before the ceremony, we worked with our P6 partners to design some stones to decorate the garden. We wrote some happy words on the stone and then drew a picture.

Before the ceremony we had a special assembly where we heard all about the Peace Garden. Then we went out to put our stones in the Garden. We laid them out to make pretty designs. Although it was very cold, the sun was shining so it was nice to be outside. We hope to really enjoy the Peace Garden when the weather is nice and sunny.

WRITING WALL

Now we have been in P1 for some time we are really enjoying writing stories. We have a writing wall in our classroom where we can read the stories we have written. We have been wrting some fairy stories. All our stories have lovely pictures to go with them.
