Gylemuir Primary School

Primary 2 Royal Observatory Visit

During our Science Week both classes visited the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill. First we went up into the dome and saw the second largest telescope in Scotland. WOW it was big! It weighed about 9 tons, roughly the same as two elephants. A railway track had to be built to carry it up the hill!

Our guide Will explained how the Earth, Sun and Moon move. Some of us played the parts of the Earth, Sun and Moon. It was tricky not to bump into one another but we got there in the end!

We watched a slideshow telling us all about the planets in our solar system and we learned lots of interesting facts. We were able to answer some of the questions because we had talked and read about the planets and solar system in class before our visit.

Finally we got to make our own sundial which will let us tell the time as long as there is sun and we know which direction North is. Our sun and shadow experiments were somewhat hampered by the lack of sun during science week!!
