SPORTING CHANCE - LITTLE ATHLETICS

This term we were to lucky to continue our activities with Sporting Chance. Our focus was 'Little Athletics'. We tried - throwing, jumping, sprinting and long distance running. Over the four weeks we improved our techniques in all these areas. We really enjoyed trying to beat our personal records. Perhaps we've got some promising athleted for London 2012 or Glasgow 2014!

Next term we are looking forward to working with Sporting Chance again - this time it will be mini-tennis - just in time for Wimbledon!
SAMBA DRUM WORKSHOP

Recently we had the opportunity to participate in a samba drumming workshop. We were shown the different types of drum used for Carnival in Brazil. We all had a turn at playing the different drums and different rhythms - some were easier than others!

Everyone enjoyed making a lot of noise!
SCIENCE WEEK

This year our focus for Science Week was Endangered Animals. Before we started we wrote off to organisations for information and were delighted to receive lots of information, posters and even pencils. We worked in groups and each group researched an animal which was endangered. We then put together a Powerpoint presentation of our research findings. Each group also made posters and leaflets to persuade people to protect endangered animals. We delivered our presentations to our class and then later to our parents during our open day.

Everyone worked really hard, especially putting together the presentations.  Our knowledge of endangered animals and how to protect wildlife from threats has really improved.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Once again, we celebrated World Book Day on March 6th. In our school, we had decided to mark the day by having a book swap for all pupils and staff. Everyone was invited to bring in a book which they had finished with to swap for another book. In P5 our whole year group got together to swap books. A variety of books appeared - P5 seem to enjoy the books of Jacqueline Wilson, Roald Dahl and all Horrid Henry books! Everyone went away with a new book to enjoy.
HEALTH WEEK

Each year we have Health Weeks in our school. Our Spring Health Week focussed on physical activities. P5 have had the chance to try out some new sports and activities.

Our first new sport was handball, a game very few of us had tried before. It is a very fast game and we would definitely like to try it again. Thank you to Andrew Caldwell, our Active Schools Coordinator for arranging this.

The next activity we tried was completely different - it was Street Dance. Following Jennifer, we learned some slick new moves.

Finally, it was ClubGolf with Mr Kinnear. This is something P5 have been working on this term. Everyone will soon have the chance to play golf at Turnhouse Golf Club as part of the ClubGolf initiative.

SPORT RELIEF

On Friday, we all rose to the challenge of completing a mile for Sport Relief. Many people found that a mile was a lot longer than they had initially thought! Muir won our inter-house competition and gained 100 points for their house.

Well done to everyone for taking part and raising money for Sport Relief.
